Black History Month

The theme for Black History Month 2023 in Canada is, Ours To Tell.

This theme represents both an opportunity to engage in open dialogue and a commitment to learn more about the stories Black communities in Canada have to tell about their histories, successes, sacrifices and triumphs.

No matter where you live, we invite all Canadians to learn more about these communities, and how they continue to shape Canadian history.

This month, students in the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board will recognize Black History Month in a variety of ways, learning about the contributions and achievements of influential Black Canadians, and their impact on our country.

Black History Month materials and resources are always available for SMCDSB staff to use to promote Black history in classrooms as part of Culturally Responsive and Relevant Pedagogy (CRRP) throughout the year.

We encourage you to take a look at our Black History Month Family Resources. Families in the SMCDSB community are also invited to take a look at events taking place in our region.
