Congratulations to Jordi Vilchez and Robbie Dunbar for receiving Catholic School Athletics of Simcoe County Student-Athlete of the Month honours for February 2023! Here is what our teacher-coach nominators had to say about this month’s recipients:
“Jordi is an Honour roll student in his Grade 12 year at St. Peter’s. The pool is his second home as a member of the Barrie Trojans and Team Ontario. At the OFSAA Swimming Championships on February 28 – March 1 in Windsor, Jordi captured two gold medals, and smashed longtime provincial records in both the 200m Open Boys Freestyle and the 100m Individual Medley. The entire aquatic center was roaring with cheers when they announced the new records that Jordi set. Jordi also helped the Open Boys 4x50m Medley Relay team place 5th in Ontario. Big things are on the horizon for this Panther!”
“Robbie Dunbar is an amazing young man. In his Grade 9 year, he attended the OFSAA Wrestling Championship in collaboration with St. Joan of Arc and Bear Creek’s wrestling programs. After that accomplishment, Robbie was determined to put in place a more established wrestling program at St. Peter’s, and did he ever. This year he coached 15 wrestlers, from Fall until now, twice a week and passed on his experience with wrestling techniques and his passion for the sport, both to the experienced and novice wrestlers. He helped 6 Panther athletes qualify for OFSAA this year, including himself. He won a silver medal at OFSAA on March 8 in Ottawa in the 57.5 kg weight division. Robbie will be Wrestling for Lakehead University next year!”
